Power plant upgrade costs of $1.1 billion could mean closure

A large power plant on the Arizona-Nevada border may close by the end of 2005.
Southern California Edison's 35-year operating permit for the Mohave Generating Station in Laughlin, Nev., expires at that time, and without upgrades, the 1,580-megawatt plant may not be allowed to continue operating.

The generating station is partially owned by Phoenix-based Salt River Project (SRP) and does provide a very small amount of electricity to the Valley, enough to power 100,000 homes according to SRP's Jeff Lane.

Lane told the Associated Press that SRP is already looking at options if the Mohave plant is closed and that perhaps SRP could expand an existing power plant near Springerville.

The power plant could reopen in 2009 or 2010 if the upgrades are made, but Southern California Edison officials said upgrades would cost an estimated $1.1 billion and that the costs include the installation of pollution control equipment, required under a 1999 consent decree with environmental groups.
